So delivering a specific amount of nutrients is a challenge when relying on dusting. In a recent study crickets groomed off over 50% of the dust applied to it within 2.5 minutes (Li et al 2009). Insect Dusting – Dusting insects to provide additional nutrients can lead to inconsistent results since factors such as grooming, the time between dusting and feeding, the palatability of the dust and the particle size of the dust itself all effect how much is actually consumed. Vita-Bug® insects are fed a modified diet to increase their nutritional content to be more in line with wild insects. As a result insect diets do not contain the same nutrients that wild insects would naturally consume. Repeat this process on a two week schedule.Currently commercial insect are primarily raised for rapid growth using the lowest cost ingredients. After the 24 hours have passed, remove any remaining Easy Water and place the worms back in the refrigerator. The mealworm bedding is their food source. This will allow them enough time to “wake up” and become more active so that they can consume food and water. Allow the mealworms to stay at room temperature for about 24 hours.
After two weeks, the mealworms should be removed from the refrigerator, and a small amount of Easy Water should be added to the top of the bedding. Mealworms can be kept in the refrigerator for up to two weeks with very little maintenance. Fill the container with about 1" of mealworm bedding, add the worms, then layer another 1" of bedding on top. If your container has a lid, it will need several aeration holes. The worms need to be transferred into a plastic container (the quantity of worms determines the size of your container). Bulk mealworms are shipped in a box containing egg crate. Mealworms purchased in bulk require a bit of prep work before they’re stored in the refrigerator. Mealworms purchased in cups should be stored in the refrigerator (a range of 42°-55° F).
